Aging and chronic illness are a reality of many. More than 80 percent of those over the age of 65 years old have been diagnosed with one or more chronic medical conditions.
These chronic conditions challenge the aging seniors ability to make changes and adapt, as well as accept new limitations to live a productive and joyful life.
The changes and limitations may have a negative impact on a seniors emotional health.
When diagnosed with any chronic illness, there will come a time, as you age, when you may face having to make some serious and life changing decisions regarding your health and medical care.
So many of my clients have expressed concern that they do not know what to discuss or questions to ask their health care professionals about their personal health care goals. Many seniors feel that the doctor is in charge.

Many seniors do not even think of their personal health care goals, but, as you age, it is important to start having discussions to plan for your future health care needs, especially if you are planning to age in place.
It is important to ask questions, as most health care providers may have a different agenda or goals for you.
And, it is important to be aware of all your options for future care needs.
You will need to discuss if you will focus on an aggressive treatment to your condition, or will there come a time when you want to focus on comfort or palliative care.
When considering treatment options, it is important to be able to discuss with your health care provider if there are curative (cure) measures and what are the palliative (comfort) measures that are available when the time comes.
